ZINC PHOSPHATE CEMENT
Description
Zinc Phosphate cement is used for luting permanent metal restorations and as a base.
It has low initial pH, it may cause pulpal irritation, especially where only thin layers of dentine exist between the pulp; thus it is important to follow the correct procedures and precautions when using zinc phosphate cement.
Procedure
Take one clean, dry glass mixing slab or paper at room temperature (22-240C and humidity of 50±10%), a non-corrosive spatula free from dust, set cement, and moisture.
Powder and Liquid Ratio:
For use as a cement: 1.0-1.3g: 0.5ml.
For use as a base: 1.2-1.5g: 0.5ml.
Mixing Technique
Place powder on the slab and divide it into three portions: 3/6th and 2/6th.
Add 1/6th of powder into placed liquid and mix them, then add the remaining portions one by one and mix well till plastic consistency is obtained.
The mixing time is about 90 seconds.
Timings
Mixing time: 1.5 minutes.
Setting time: 2.5 to 8 minutes for cement; 2 to 6 minutes for the base.
